There is no railway station in Kargil; the nearest railheads are Jammu Tawi (about 440 km) or Srinagar, both reached by road.
How to reach Kargil by road
Kargil sits on NH1 between Srinagar and Leh. The stretch over Zoji La towards Srinagar is typically closed by snow in winter, and the section towards Dras and Leh can also see temporary weather blockages.

For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Kargil
- The bazaar walk is gentle and level, but avoid the hottest part of the afternoon and carry water. Restaurants are close by.
- Dras (3,300 m) is higher and colder. The drive from Kargil is scenic but takes 1.5 hours; consider a single day trip rather than staying overnight unless you are very fit.
- Hire a car and driver for all journeys. Shared jeeps are crowded and unreliable, and walking distances to attractions are long.
- Medical facilities are limited to a district hospital in Kargil. Serious emergencies may require evacuation to Leh (6+ hours) or Srinagar (6+ hours). Carry any necessary medications and a first-aid kit.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
