Before you go

Kargil with elderly parents: what to know

  • Acclimatize for 1–2 days in Kargil (2,676 m) before any active sightseeing. Consult your doctor about altitude before visiting, especially if you have heart or lung conditions.
  • The bazaar walk is gentle and level, but avoid the hottest part of the afternoon and carry water. Restaurants are close by.
  • Dras (3,300 m) is higher and colder. The drive from Kargil is scenic but takes 1.5 hours; consider a single day trip rather than staying overnight unless you are very fit.
  • Hotels have simple rooms without air conditioning (not needed at this altitude) but with heating. Confirm heating works and the bathroom is adjacent to the room to avoid long walks at night.
  • Hire a car and driver for all journeys. Shared jeeps are crowded and unreliable, and walking distances to attractions are long.
  • Medical facilities are limited to a district hospital in Kargil. Serious emergencies may require evacuation to Leh (6+ hours) or Srinagar (6+ hours). Carry any necessary medications and a first-aid kit.
  • The bazaar shuts down early (by 7 pm) and the town is quiet. Arrange dinners in advance with your hotel rather than hunting for open restaurants after dark.

Easiest first

Places in Kargil sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (10)

  • Dras River Valley (Culture and craft · 1–2 hours for walks; full day for a longer ramble) — Walking along the river is mostly level, though surfaces vary from paved to rocky. The altitude (3200 metres) is noticeable, so walk slowly and take breaks. There is little shade in summer.
  • Drass War Cemetery (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — The cemetery is accessible and not strenuous. Paths are well-tended, though altitude is roughly 3200 metres, so walk slowly if you are acclimatising. There are shaded benches throughout.
  • Ek Sarai (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes) — The sarai is accessible from the road with minimal walking. The structure has stood for centuries and parts are rough; wear shoes with grip. There is little shade, so bring water and a hat.
  • Hunderman (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 1 hour to walk and rest; better as an overnight stop) — Hunderman is flat and compact. Guesthouses offer simple lodging. The altitude is about 3000 metres, so those acclimatising will do well here. There is little shade in summer but lodges provide shelter.
  • Kargil Bazaar (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The bazaar is on a gently sloping main street with shops on both sides, and the walking is level. Altitude at Kargil is roughly 2,700 metres, so take time to acclimatise if arriving from lower elevations. Benches are not plentiful, but shops welcome you to sit inside.
  • Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The museum is on one floor with level access. Altitude is 2,700 metres, so the walking is not strenuous, but take your time if arriving from lower regions. The curator will offer tea.
  • Padum (Places to visit · 4–5 hours drive each way; allow a full day or overnight) — The drive to Padum is long and bouncy. The town itself is flat and walkable. Altitude is 3600 metres, so allow a day to acclimatise. Lodges are basic but hospitable.
  • Pasku (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 1 hour to stop, walk and rest) — Pasku is flat and compact. Lodges provide shelter and rest. The main road is busy but walkable. Altitude is around 3000 metres, so elders should have acclimatised.
  • Suru Bridge (Places to visit · 15–30 minutes) — The bridge is easily accessible; walk onto it from the road without climbing. The bridge has railings. Do not walk against traffic or linger in the traffic flow.
  • Suru River (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the site) — Many spots to view the river are accessible from the road with short walks. The riverbanks can be steep and slippery, especially near water. Wear shoes with grip and do not venture close to fast current, especially in summer.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Dras (Places to visit · 3–4 hours as a day trip from Kargil, or break a drive to Leh here) — Dras is at 3,200 metres, higher than Kargil. Older travellers should be aware of altitude; the walk around the memorial is not strenuous. The wind can be strong and the sun intense; bring water, hat and sunscreen.
  • Kargil War Memorial (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — A road or walking path leads to the memorial. The walk is not strenuous but the altitude is significant (roughly 3,200 metres). Older travellers should take their time and bring water.
  • Khurbathang Plateau (Culture and craft · Full day from Kargil; better as a 1–2 day trek) — The jeep ride is very rough. The plateau itself is exposed and windy. Altitude is 3800–4000 metres, so acclimatisation is needed. Not suitable for those with knee problems or poor balance due to uneven ground.
  • Wakha Rong Valley (Culture and craft · Full day from Kargil, including drive and walk) — Road access is bumpy; internal walking is gentle on valley floors but at high altitude. Senior visitors should be acclimatised and prepared for physical constraints of mountain transport.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (5)

  • Kargil Fort Ruins (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours, including the climb) — The climb to the fort is steep and uneven. The path may have loose stones. Older travellers may find the ascent tiring. The effort is worth it for the views, but take time and consider using a walking stick.
  • Sod Valley (Culture and craft · Full day from Kargil; better as a 1–2 night trek) — The terrain is steep and exposed, at high altitude, with minimal facilities. Not suitable for older or less mobile visitors unless they are accustomed to alpine hiking.
  • Tiger Hill (Places to visit · 2–3 hours, including hiking and time at the site) — The climb to Tiger Hill is steep and uneven, with loose rock. The altitude is significant (roughly 4,000 metres). Older travellers or those with fitness concerns should reconsider or hire a guide and go slowly. The effort is challenging even for fit visitors.
  • Tololing (Places to visit · 3–4 hours, including hiking and time at the site) — The hike to Tololing is steep and gains altitude quickly. The altitude is roughly 4,100 metres. Older travellers or those with limited fitness should not attempt this hike without considerable acclimatisation and support. It is a strenuous excursion even for fit visitors.
  • Zanskar (Places to visit · Full day from Kargil; better as 2–3 day trek or multi-day expedition) — Access to Zanskar involves high-altitude terrain, rough roads and basic accommodation. Not suitable for those with altitude sensitivity or mobility limitations unless they remain at lower elevations (e.g., Padum only).
