Before you go
Konark with elderly parents: what to know
- The Sun Temple has steep, uneven steps and three levels. Wear sturdy shoes with grip, use a walking stick if needed, and take your time. A good guide is not optional; they can show you the least strenuous routes and help you rest safely.
- Visit the temple early, before 10 a.m., when it is cooler and less crowded. The afternoon heat and glare reflect harshly off the stone.
- Bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen. There is little shade on the temple grounds; rest under the few covered porticos or in your car.
- Chandrabhaga Beach is level and easy; a leisurely walk here is a gentler morning or evening activity after the temple.
- The Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary offers jeep safaris, which spare you a long walk. If walking trails appeal, they are mostly flat but exposed; go early or late in the day.
- The road from Puri to Konark is decent but can be bumpy in places. A car with good suspension and a driver who knows the route matters, especially for comfort.
- Hospitals and pharmacies are in Puri, not Konark itself. Make sure your hotel knows where to find them, and carry any regular medications from home.
Easiest first
Places in Konark sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (7)
- Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — Much of the sanctuary can be appreciated from a car along the Marine Drive road, where deer are often visible without leaving the vehicle. Any walking trails inside are informal, sandy forest paths without paving, benches or shade, so a road-side viewing approach suits most older travellers better than an on-foot excursion.
- Chandrabhaga Beach (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The beach is flat, open sand with a paved promenade running along part of it, benches, and seasonal lifeguard posts. There is little shade midday, so an early or late visit suits older travellers better, and a car can drop you close to the promenade entrance.
- Konark Archaeological Museum (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The museum is a single-storey, indoor building with level galleries, fans or air conditioning depending on the room, and no significant walking beyond the exhibit route. It is a good place to rest out of the sun between temple and beach.
- Konark Natya Mandap (Culture and craft · 20 minutes outside festival dates; a full evening during the festival) — The open-air auditorium has fixed seating and level access from the entrance, making it manageable for older visitors during festival performances, though evenings can be cool and seating is not cushioned; carry a light layer and a cushion if attending a full programme.
- Konark Sun Temple Market (Shopping · 15–30 minutes) — The stalls line a short, flat stretch of road or path near the temple entrance, easy to browse without much walking, though pavements can be uneven in places and vendors can be persistent; a firm, polite decline works if you would rather move on.
- Okaasan Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 45–75 minutes for a meal) — A ground-floor dining room with table seating, which is easier for older diners than floor seating common at some small Odisha eateries. Service is simple rather than polished; ask for milder spicing if needed, as coastal Odia food can run hot by unadjusted standards.
- Ramachandi Temple (Places of worship · 20–40 minutes) — The temple courtyard is small and level, shaded by casuarina trees, with the beach immediately alongside for those who want to sit rather than walk. There are no stairs to the shrine itself, though the wider grounds are informal, sandy ground rather than paving.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Konark Sun Temple (Places to visit · 2–3 hours) — The temple platform is uneven sandstone with low plinths, a few steps between levels and almost no shade. A wheelchair-accessible ramp exists near the entrance, but most of the site rewards a slow pace with a guide who can plan rest points. Carry water and a hat even in winter.
- Kuruma Buddhist Site (Culture and craft · 45 minutes to 1 hour, plus travel) — The excavated courtyard is open ground with uneven, partly grassed surfaces and no formal paths, benches or shade. It suits visitors who can manage a short, unpaved walk; a car can get close to the site, reducing the distance covered on foot.

Practical tips for Konark
- There is almost no shade at the Sun Temple. The temple platform is open stone with very little tree cover. Carry a hat, sunscreen and water even in the cooler months, and plan an early visit rather than a midday one, particularly from March to June.
- The temple's stone steps and plinths are uneven. Surfaces are original, centuries-old sandstone and khondalite, not evenly finished paving. Wear closed shoes with grip, take a walking stick if you use one at home, and move slowly between levels.
- Hire a car and driver rather than relying on autos. Konark's sights, the beach, Ramachandi Temple, Kuruma and the wildlife sanctuary, are spread out with limited public transport between them. A private car for the day is the practical way to see more than the temple alone.
- Konark has very few restaurants. Most visitors eat at their hotel or one of a handful of simple establishments near the temple. If you have specific dietary needs, mention them when booking accommodation so the kitchen can plan ahead.
- Dress modestly at Ramachandi Temple and other shrines. These are working places of worship, not just monuments. Cover shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing the deity or the sanctum directly.
- Confirm opening days before visiting the museum. The Archaeological Museum near the Sun Temple typically closes one day a week. Check the current closure day locally so it does not derail a tightly planned morning.
- Carry cash for smaller purchases and entry fees. ATMs and card acceptance are limited outside the main hotels. Keep small denominations for market stalls, guide fees and minor tickets.
- Plan swims carefully at Chandrabhaga and Ramachandi beaches. Currents beyond the marked, lifeguarded stretches can be unpredictable, and lifeguard cover is seasonal. Stick to shallow, supervised areas, especially with children or less confident swimmers.
