Before you go
Mysuru with elderly parents: what to know
- The palace is level and has seating areas; wear comfortable shoes and move at your own pace. A guide can explain the rooms if you wish, but self-paced is fine too.
- Chamundi Hill has vehicle access to the top; you need not climb if your knees are a concern. The temple at the summit is small and largely level.
- Plan one major sight per morning, rest after lunch and keep evenings gentle. The pace here is naturally slower than in bigger cities.
- Choose a hotel with lifts, near a hospital or pharmacy. C-type Bangalore hospitals have Mysuru branches if urgent care is needed.
- A private car and driver is worth hiring for Chamundi Hill, Shravanabelagola and Brindavan Gardens. It gives you rest between sights and avoids walking to distant parking.
- The old bazaar lanes are narrow and crowded; seniors may prefer the market early morning or a quick visit on the fringe rather than deep exploration.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Temple floors are cool but can be slippery after ritual washings. Socks are useful if you are removing shoes frequently.
Easiest first

- Brindavan Gardens (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours, plus travel) — The gardens are largely flat and well-paved. Benches are placed throughout for rest. The visitor path is marked and easy to follow. The only significant change in elevation is the slope down from the entrance, which is manageable.
- Government Museum (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours) — The building is single-storey with mostly level access, though some galleries have small steps between rooms. Benches are provided in major galleries, and the overall pace of the museum is relaxed.
- Hazara Rama Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The temple is compact with level ground and no stairs inside the main prayer chamber. There are benches where you can rest while studying the carved walls. A car can drop you nearby, and the walk is short.
- Irwin Park (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Flat, paved paths with benches placed throughout. Tree cover provides shade. No entry fees or entry crowds. A car can drop you at the gate.
- Jagannath Temple (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — The temple is modest in size with ground-level entries and no long climbs. The main chamber and courtyard are accessible. Go early or late to avoid midday heat and crowds. There are benches in the courtyard for rest.
- Karanji Lake (Places to visit · 1-1.5 hours) — Flat, paved walking path around the perimeter. Benches are placed at intervals for rest. There is a small entry fee. The path is shaded in places by trees. No strenuous climbing required.
- Krishna Temple (Places of worship · 20–45 minutes) — The temple courtyard is level, but the sanctum involves a few steps. Queues can be long during busy periods, and standing room inside may be limited.
- Lakshmi Narasimha Temple (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — A compact temple with level ground and short corridors. Benches are available in the courtyard. There are a few steps to the inner sanctum, but manageable. A car can drop you at the gate.

Some walking — plan a break (7)
- Chamundeshwari Temple (Places of worship · 1–1.5 hours, plus travel) — A vehicle road reaches most of the way up; the final climb is 100+ steps to the inner temple, which is steep. Alternatively, older visitors can visit the lower, older Lakshmi temple or view the temple from the roadside.
- Devaraja Market (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The market is crowded, with narrow aisles and uneven pavements. It can be overwhelming for those who dislike chaos or crowds. Older travellers might prefer a quick early-morning visit to main areas rather than exploring side lanes.
- Mysore Palace (Places to visit · 2–3 hours) — The palace has stairs between floors and uneven thresholds in places, but the ground floor courtyards and many galleries are accessible. Benches are scattered through the galleries. A car can drop you at the entrance gates, and staff can suggest the gentlest route.
- Mysuru Zoo (Places to visit · 2–3 hours) — The zoo requires considerable walking on paved paths with some gentle slopes. Benches are placed at viewing areas. A golf cart tour is sometimes available; inquire at the entrance. The zoo is large, so plan rest stops.
- Sisodia Rani Palace (Places to visit · 1-1.5 hours, plus travel) — The palace has stairs both outside and inside, and the gardens involve some walking on uneven paths. A car can drop you close to the entrance. Benches are available in the gardens for rest.
- Sri Nanjundeswara Temple (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The temple involves some steps and steep staircases in places. The lower courtyards and viewing areas are manageable; going to the upper sanctum may be difficult for those with knee problems.
- Talakad (Places to visit · 2-3 hours on site, plus 45 minutes travel from Mysuru each way) — Walking is on sandy terrain and occasional uneven ground near ruins. There is no shade. The walking distances are not great, but sandy footing can tire legs. Benches are scarce; plan rest stops. A car can drop you and pick you up at the main temple.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Shravanabelagola (Places to visit · 3-4 hours including travel; 2 hours on site) — The climb to the statue is steep, involving roughly 600+ uneven steps. There are few rest points. The summit is not accessible for those with mobility issues. However, the temples at the base are accessible and worth seeing. Consider doing just the base temples if climbing is not feasible.
