Before you go
Tso Moriri with elderly parents: what to know
- Do not skip acclimatisation. Spend at least one full day at Leh (3,500 metres) before heading to Tso Moriri (4,522 metres). Ideally, spend time at an intermediate altitude like Khardung La (5,359 metres) pass on your way, which allows gradual adjustment.
- Consult your doctor before travelling. Inform them of your medical history, medications and any heart, lung or blood pressure concerns. High altitude can trigger or worsen these conditions.
- Altitude sickness symptoms include headache, nausea, shortness of breath and poor sleep. If symptoms are severe, descend immediately. Acetazolamide (Diamox) is sometimes prescribed; discuss this with your doctor in advance.
- Protect yourself from the sun and dryness. Apply sunscreen (SPF 50+) every hour, wear a hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and drink 3–4 litres of water daily despite the cold. The air is extremely dry and the sun intense.
- Keep warm and move slowly. Layers are essential; the temperature swings from near-freezing at night to warm in direct sunlight during the day. Avoid exertion and allow rest days between activities.
- Arrange a reliable driver and vehicle. An SUV or Jeep is safer than a sedan. Ensure your driver has experience with high-altitude plateau driving and knows the road to Tso Moriri.
- Stock medications and supplies from Leh. There is no medical facility at Tso Moriri; the nearest clinic is hours away. Carry prescribed medications, painkillers, anti-diarrhoeal tablets, antacids and any personal medical equipment.
Easiest first
Places in Tso Moriri sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Effectively the whole time you spend travelling through the region) — Almost all wildlife viewing here is done from a vehicle or a short walk near the road; there is no trekking required, though the extreme altitude across the sanctuary, from 4,300 to 5,800 metres, means the same acclimatisation and health precautions apply throughout.
- Chumathang Hot Springs (Places to visit · 30-60 minutes for a soak; longer if staying overnight) — The bath house is at ground level with no stairs to speak of, and a warm soak can genuinely help stiff joints after a long drive; water temperature is not regulated, so ease in gradually and avoid it if you have heart or blood pressure conditions without medical advice.
- Tso Kar (Places to visit · 1-3 hours; most people see it while passing between Leh and Tso Moriri) — Viewing is largely done from the roadside or short, flat walks near the shore; there is no climbing, though the altitude of over 4,500 metres means the same acclimatisation precautions as Tso Moriri apply.
- Tso Moriri (Places to visit · A full day around the lake; most visitors stay 1-2 nights at Korzok) — The shoreline walk at Korzok is flat and needs no scrambling, but the altitude (4,522 m) is the real obstacle: even fit seniors can find breathing and sleep difficult without acclimatisation, and there is no hospital nearer than Leh, six to eight hours away.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Korzok Monastery (Places of worship · 20-40 minutes) — The climb from the village is short but steep and at 4,500+ metres altitude even a few minutes of exertion can leave visitors breathless; go slowly, pause often, and skip it if you are not yet acclimatised.

Practical tips for Tso Moriri
- Altitude comes first. At 4,500+ metres, acclimatisation matters more than fitness. Spend at least one full day in Leh before continuing, and consider breaking the drive at a lower point such as Chumathang.
- There is no quick way out. The nearest hospital is in Leh, six to eight hours away. Discuss any heart, lung or blood pressure conditions with your doctor before travelling, and carry any prescribed altitude medication.
- Getting around means one vehicle, one driver. There is no public transport on the Changthang plateau. Book an experienced driver and a sturdy SUV or jeep in Leh; sedans struggle on the rougher stretches.
- Cash and supplies come from Leh. Korzok and the villages beyond have very limited shops. Withdraw cash and buy any snacks, medication or extra layers before leaving Leh.
- Cold is real even in summer. Nights drop close to freezing even in July and August, and wind off the lakes is constant. Pack proper down or fleece layers, not just a light jacket.
- Dress modestly at Korzok Monastery. Remove shoes before entering the prayer hall and dress modestly. Ask before photographing monks or interiors, and accept that the monastery may be closed if a ceremony is underway.
- Respect the wildlife sanctuary. Tso Moriri, Tso Kar and the plateau between them sit inside Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. Keep well back from kiang herds and nesting cranes, and stay on existing tracks.
- Sun and dryness are stronger than they look. High-altitude sun is intense even on cool days. Use SPF 50+, lip balm and UV-blocking sunglasses, and drink more water than feels necessary in the dry air.
