Before you go
Jim Corbett with elderly parents: what to know
- Safaris require early 4–5 a.m. departures and bumpy jeep rides on unpaved roads for 4–5 hours. Check your fitness level and discuss with your doctor before booking. Consider a jeep with better suspension and padding.
- Choose a lodge with a trained naturalist driver (many speak English), not just any jeep hire. A good guide makes the experience richer and the ride less tiring.
- Book safaris in Bijrani or Jhirna if roads are less rough. Dhikala is famous but has the most challenging terrain. Ask your lodge which zone is best for comfort.
- Schedule one rest day during a 3-day visit. Skip a safari, rest in the lodge garden, visit the museum, or take a gentle riverside walk instead.
- Carry a cushion or lumbar support for jeep rides, sunscreen, a wide hat and insect repellent. Mornings are cold; bring a cardigan or fleece jacket.
- Request meals in advance if you need lighter food, diabetic-friendly dishes or specific vegetarian preparations. Most lodges will accommodate with notice.
- Many lodges offer ayurvedic massage or spa services; book in advance if wellness treatments appeal to you as a rest-day activity.
Easiest first
Places in Jim Corbett sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (14)
- Bijrani (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours for a safari) — The road to Bijrani is rough but shorter than to Dhikala. Lodges are comfortable. Jeep safaris suit older travellers well.
- Chilla (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours for a safari; most visitors do one or two safaris here) — Jeep safaris suit older travellers well. The road is unpaved but less rough than to Dhikala. Chilla lodges range from basic to comfortable.
- Corbett Museum (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The museum is a small, single-storey building with minimal climbing. It can get warm in summer but is pleasant in winter. Nearby Kaladhungi has cafés and resting spots.
- Dhikala (Culture and craft · 2–3 days minimum; most visitors stay 1–2 nights at the rest house with 2–3 safaris) — The forest rest house accommodations range from basic to comfortable, with beds, mosquito nets and attached bathrooms. Jeep safaris are the main activity and suit older travellers well. The landscape is flat to gently rolling, with shade in forested areas.
- Jhirna (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours per safari; most visitors do a morning and afternoon slot) — Jeep safaris involve sitting in an open vehicle on bumpy forest tracks for several hours. There are no stairs or long walks, but the bouncing, dust and heat require reasonable fitness. Lodges near Jhirna can arrange pickups and drop-offs at the gate, and the morning chill in winter makes early starts manageable.
- Jim Corbett National Park (Places to visit · 3–5 days minimum for a good experience; most people visit for 2–3 jeep safaris over multiple days) — Jeep safaris are accessible for older travellers, though the roads are unpaved and bumpy. Early morning starts suit those who can manage it. Lodges range from basic to comfortable, with good options in Ramnagar town and within the park at Dhikala.
- Kunao (Places to visit · A half-day if visiting, or an overnight stay as a base) — Kunao is flat and easy to walk around. Lodges can arrange all transport. It is a quiet place with fewer crowds, which older adults may find restful after safaris.
- Nainital (Places to visit · A full day trip (4–5 hours driving with time at the lake) or an overnight stay) — Nainital is a level lake town with promenades, benches and cafes. Walks around the lake are flat. Cable car access to Tiffin Top avoids the climbing. One of the easier hill stations for older adults.
- Phato Zone (Culture and craft · About 3 hours for the safari, plus 45 minutes each way from Ramnagar) — It is a jeep safari, so there is no walking, but forest tracks are bumpy and the morning slot starts before dawn. Sit in the middle row, carry a cushion and a warm layer for winter mornings.
- Ramganga River (Places to visit · 30 minutes to 1 hour at a viewpoint; or hours during a safari near the river) — Views of the river come from the safari jeep or from the Dhikala forest lodge grounds, where you can sit on flat ground. There is no walking access to the water, which suits older adults who prefer to stay seated.
- Ramghat (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The ghat has steps down to the water and uneven landings. The area is not heavily commercialised, so it is quiet and suitable for peaceful time.
- Ramnagar (Places to visit · A few hours for shopping and meals; most time is spent in lodges and going to the park) — Ramnagar is a working town, not a tourist resort, but has functional hotels and restaurants. The main market is busy and narrow; the park lodges are quieter. Most older travellers stay in a lodge rather than exploring the town much.
- Ramnagar Railway Station (Places to visit · 20–30 minutes for a visit; you will likely pass through as a transit point) — The station is small and flat. There is a waiting hall with benches. A taxi or auto from the station is the easiest transport to hotels.
- Sitabani (Places of worship · 4–5 hours from Ramnagar including the forest drive) — Access is by jeep on forest roads, which are bumpy. The temple area itself is compact with a few steps. There are no facilities beyond basic ones, so carry water and use the toilet in Ramnagar before setting out.
Some walking — plan a break (6)
- Almora (Places to visit · A full day trip (5–6 hours driving plus time in town) or an overnight stay recommended) — Almora is built on a ridge and involves climbing and descending steep streets. The bazaar is on slopes, not flat. Older adults should be ready for hill walking, but the pace is slow and benches are available.
- Garjiya (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The footbridge is narrow with handrails but manageable. The temple courtyard has uneven stone and a climb of 40–50 steps. Older travellers can manage it if they go slowly.
- Kanda (Culture and craft · 3–4 hours per safari; rougher roads make it slower than Jhirna) — The jeep tracks in Kanda are rougher and narrower than Jhirna, with more climbing and descending. The jolting can be harder on joints and the spine. Older adults who managed Jhirna may find Kanda tiring; those with back or knee issues should consider sticking to Jhirna.
- Kosi River (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for a riverside walk or a rafting session; can be paired with a safari on the same day) — A car can take you close to the river access points. Riverside walks are flat and shaded in places, but uneven in patches. Rafting is gentle in winter but not for those with joint issues or poor balance.
- Malini River (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for a stop and a walk, or several hours if combining with Almora) — There are no formal paths or facilities. Access involves walking beside the river on uneven ground. Older adults comfortable with nature walks can manage a short visit, but this is not a refined viewing spot like Ramghat.
- Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · A full day: 2–3 hour safari each way with a meal break, plus travel from Ramnagar) — Jeep safaris are quieter here because there are fewer vehicles overall, but the track conditions can be patchy. Older adults who have done Jim Corbett safaris can manage Sonanadi, though the journey from Ramnagar adds travel time.
