Before you go

Jodhpur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit Mehrangarh Fort at opening time, take a jeep up to Jaleb Chowk, and hire a guide to avoid unnecessary stairs inside.
  • The old city bazaars are level but crowded and can be disorienting. Go in late morning before the afternoon heat, and allow extra time to rest in courtyards or cafés.
  • Umaid Bhawan Palace, Kaylana Lake and Balsamand Lake are comfortable, level outings. Avoid midday hours when heat is extreme.
  • Choose a hotel in Sardarpura or Ratanada rather than inside the old city for easier car access, better medical facilities and quieter nights.
  • Hire a car and driver for the entire stay. It provides air-conditioned rest between sights and avoids long walks in heat.
  • Ratanada Ganesh Temple and Mahamandira are active temples with stairs and uneven floors. Wear socks and be prepared for crowds on festivals.
  • Carry water, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and electrolyte tablets. The desert heat is unforgiving, even in winter.

Easiest first

Places in Jodhpur sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (11)

  • Balsamand Lake (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The lake can be viewed from the parking area or a short walk. There are benches and shaded spots. It is one of the easiest stops in Jodhpur for older travellers.
  • Jaswant Thada (Places to visit · 20–40 minutes) — A car can drop you at the entrance. There are some steps up to the main structure, but they are not steep. The gardens are level and shaded by trees, making it a pleasant rest spot.
  • Kaylana Lake (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 2 hours) — The lake can be viewed from parking areas or a short walk. There are benches at spots. It is a comfortable visit for older travellers.
  • Machia Biological Park (Culture and craft · 1.5–2 hours) — The park has trails, some of which are level and some slightly undulating. There are shaded rest areas and benches. An easy trail around the perimeter is suitable for most travellers, while longer circuits require more stamina.
  • Mahamandira Temple (Places of worship · 20–30 minutes) — The temple is approached through narrow lanes and has some steps into the main courtyard. Inside, it is relatively compact and level. It is a peaceful place and usually not crowded.
  • Mandore Garden (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours) — The garden is flat and tree-shaded, with plenty of benches. A car can reach the main areas. Walking is at your own pace. It is one of the better heritage stops for older travellers who do not want to climb forts.
  • Nawal Sagar Lake (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — The promenade around the lake is flat, paved and accessible. There are benches and shaded rest areas. It is one of the easiest and most comfortable outdoor activities in Jodhpur for older travellers.
  • Ratanada Ganesh Temple (Places of worship · 30–45 minutes) — The approach is a short walk through narrow lanes, and there are steps into the temple. The main courtyards are level once inside. It is not crowded and has a calm, meditative feel that many older travellers appreciate.
  • Sardar Samand Lake (Places to visit · Half day (with travel), or a full day or overnight stay) — The palace is accessible by car, and most areas are level or gently sloping. The gardens are pleasant to walk through, and there is plenty of seating. It is a restful place for travellers who find fort climbing difficult.
  • Umaid Bhawan Palace (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — The approach involves some climbing to the palace, but cars can drop you near the entrance. Inside the museum, walking is level and indoors. The grounds have steps but benches for resting. It is one of the easier heritage visits for parents.
  • Veer Durgadas Smarak (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — The monument is set in a park with paths that are mostly level. There are benches for rest, and it is a peaceful, uncrowded place. The memorial may have some steps or ramps, but navigating it is not strenuous.

Some walking — plan a break (9)

  • Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) (Places to visit · 1–2 hours in the surrounding bazaar) — The surrounding bazaar is crowded and chaotic. If your parent prefers quiet, this is not the place. If they enjoy bustling markets and people-watching, the lower bazaar level is manageable; climbing the tower is steep and narrow.
  • Johari Bazaar (Shopping · 30–60 minutes, depending on pace and patience) — The bazaar is crowded, with narrow lanes, uneven pavements and no seating. It can be overwhelming for older travellers. Early morning is calmer. Go with a family member, set a short time, and use a nearby café as a rest stop.
  • Mehrangarh Fort (Places to visit · 2.5–3 hours) — A drive gets you to the gate with minimal walking. Inside, there are many stairs and uneven thresholds between palace rooms, but also benches to rest. The upper ramparts have some exposed sections with drops, so sure footing matters. The lower palace rooms are manageable for most older visitors.
  • Old City (Blue City Lanes) (Places to visit · 1–3 hours, depending on pace and stops) — The lanes are narrow, uneven and sometimes have steps. There is no fixed walking route, and navigation can be confusing. Older travellers may find it tiring. Consider a guided walk or a slow pace with frequent rest stops.
  • Osian (Places to visit · Full morning or afternoon, plus 4 hours travel) — The temples are on open sand, and you move between them on foot. It is warm and exposed, so early morning is better than afternoon. The temples themselves have some steps and uneven surfaces. Not the easiest walk, but doable with patience.
  • Rajinder Bazaar (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The bazaar is congested with narrow lanes and uneven ground. There is little seating and no dedicated tourist infrastructure. Going early reduces crowds. A short visit of 30–45 minutes is more realistic than a long walk.
  • Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park (Culture and craft · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The park is relatively flat but has rocky, uneven terrain. Walking is slow and careful. There are benches at rest points. It is easier than climbing a fort but requires sure footing.
  • Sachiya Mata Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours at the temple) — The temple has steps and uneven floors. Footwear is removed before entering, which can be uncomfortable for people with sensitive feet. The interior is dimly lit and can be a bit disorienting. It is manageable but not the easiest temple visit.
  • Toorji Ka Jhalra (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — There are many steps down into the well, which are steep and uneven. The descent is manageable for steady walkers, but the return climb is harder. Rest points are limited. If climbing stairs is difficult, view the well from the upper level only.
