Jammu Tawi is the nearest mainline railway station, several hours away; rail is not a practical way to reach Sonamarg directly.
How to reach Sonamarg by road
The Srinagar-Leh highway passes through Sonamarg; the road beyond towards Zojila pass is snowbound and closed for much of the year.

Hire a car and driver from Srinagar for the full journey; ponies can be hired locally for glacier and lake treks, and shared taxis run from Ganderbal in season.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Sonamarg
- Mobile and internet connectivity can be patchy; do not rely on it for emergencies. Know the location of the nearest clinic or doctor (usually in Ganderbal, about 30–45 km away). Carry basic medications: painkillers, anti-diarrhoeal, antihistamines and any personal prescriptions.
- The road to Sonamarg is open only June to September; winter closures are due to heavy snow and avalanche risk. Do not attempt to travel in October or later without checking road conditions. The new Z-Morh Tunnel is still under construction and not yet fully operational for regular traffic.
- Hire a reliable car and driver from Srinagar for the journey; do not attempt to drive the winding mountain road yourself if unfamiliar. The drive is scenic but steep and includes numerous hairpin turns.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
