Landmarks in Sonamarg

Baltal
A valley 15 km east of Sonamarg, at the foot of Zoji La, that serves as the shorter of the two starting points for the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Outside the summer pilgrimage season it is a quiet stop with wide Sind valley views.

The glacier-fed river that runs alongside Sonamarg and gives the valley its shape, used for seasonal rafting and long-standing trout fishing. It is less a single sight than the backdrop to almost everything in town.

Thajiwas Glacier
A broad tongue of ice above Sonamarg town, reached by pony or a short climb from Thajiwas Park. It is the easiest close-up look at a Himalayan glacier most visitors will get without a multi-day trek.

A 6.5 km highway tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg, open since January 2025, that bypasses a steep, avalanche-prone stretch of the old Z-shaped road. It is a drive-through rather than a stop, but it has changed how reliably Sonamarg can be reached.

Zoji La
The high pass east of Sonamarg where the Kashmir Valley meets Ladakh, and where the Srinagar-Leh highway climbs to around 3,500 m through a run of tight switchbacks. Cross it only if you are continuing onward; there is nothing to stop for at the top.

Vishansar and Krishansar Lakes
Twin alpine lakes at around 3,700 m, reached over the Nichnai Pass and the traditional start of the multi-day Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. This is a serious high-altitude camping trip, not a day walk from Sonamarg.
