Before you go

Coorg with elderly parents: what to know

  • Hire a car and driver for the full duration of your stay. Coorg's roads are winding, and auto-rickshaws are infrequent in rural areas.
  • Do Madikeri Fort and Raja's Seat in the morning before the heat. Both are at moderate elevation and the walks are short.
  • Waterfall walks (Abbey Falls, Irupu) involve some steep sections and wet rocks. Choose flat-ground alternatives like Nisargadhama if mobility is a concern.
  • High-altitude roads to Talakaveri and beyond can be narrow and windy. If you suffer from motion sickness, sit in the front seat and ask the driver to go slowly.
  • Stay hydrated. The elevation and cool mornings can mask dehydration. Carry water bottles and rest often.
  • Check the monsoon forecast if you visit June to September. Landslides can block roads for hours, and some sights are inaccessible.
  • Book hotels with lifts if climbing stairs is difficult. Many older properties in the town centre have no lifts.

Easiest first

Places in Coorg sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (13)

  • Bhagamandala (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The site is compact and flat. Walking to the stream confluence and the temple is short and does not require climbing. The main temple is accessible, though shoes must be removed.
  • Golden Temple (Namdroling Monastery) (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The main temple is reached across a level courtyard with only a few steps into the hall. Inside is cool and spacious, with space to stand or sit quietly at the back. Parking is close to the gate, and there are cafés and toilets inside the settlement.
  • Gonikoppal (Shopping · 30–45 minutes for a good walk) — The market centre is flat and compact. A car can drop you near the main junction, and a short walk covers all the active shops.
  • Honnamana Kere (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours, including the drive and the visit) — The walk around the lake is gentle and mostly flat. The path is informal and can be muddy after rain, but the pace is entirely your own. Benches or logs are sometimes available for sitting.
  • Madikeri (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for the town on foot; used as a base for 2–3 days in the region) — The main market area has uneven pavements and some narrow lanes, but the town is compact and mostly flat within the central zone. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available, and cafés are plentiful for rest stops.
  • Madikeri Fort (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The walk from town to the fort is uphill but not steep, taking about 15 minutes. The fort itself is mostly level once you reach the top. There are low stone walls to lean on, and the ramparts are wide enough to walk easily.
  • Nagarhole National Park (Places to visit · 3–4 hours for a jeep or boat safari, plus travel) — Jeep safaris can be bumpy on forest tracks, and boat rides on the Kabini involve sitting for 1.5–2 hours. The journey is feasible for those with basic fitness, but not for people with serious back or knee issues.
  • Nisargadhama (Places to visit · 2–2.5 hours, including boat rides and the island walk) — The main challenge is the boat ride, which can rock if the river is in spate. Once on the island, the walk is mostly shaded and level, on a well-maintained path. Benches are placed along the path for resting.
  • Omkareshwara Temple (Places of worship · 20–30 minutes) — There is a flight of steps leading down to the temple from the road, but it is not steep. The temple courtyard is level, and benches are available.
  • Raja's Seat (Places to visit · 15–30 minutes) — The site is reached by a short, gentle walk from the town, and the viewing pavilion itself requires minimal walking. There are seats in the pavilion for those who need to rest, and the entire visit is unhurried.
  • Somwarpet (Shopping · 30–45 minutes) — The market is small and flat, with easy walking. A car can stop near the main shops, and there are tea stands nearby.
  • Talakaveri (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes at the site; 90 minutes there and back by road from Madikeri) — The site itself is compact and involves very little walking. The main challenge is the winding mountain road from Madikeri, which can feel bumpy and slow. Once there, the temple is accessible, and the tank area is level. Go slowly and allow for motion sickness remedies if you are prone to them.
  • Virajpet (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The market streets are flat and paved, with shops on both sides. There are small tea stands and benches outside shops where you can sit. A car can drop you at the main street, and distances are short.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Abbey Falls (Places to visit · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, including the drive) — The walk through the plantation to the falls is on a good path, mostly downhill and shaded by trees. The path can be muddy after rain. Older visitors often manage the walk slowly, but the return uphill path is the more tiring part. Plan rest stops if needed.
  • Dubare Elephant Camp (Culture and craft · 2–3 hours) — Walking on sandy riverbanks near the elephants is flat and easy, but the terrain is loose and uneven. Assistance is available for those who need it. The visit involves standing and walking slowly for 1–2 hours.
  • Irupu Falls (Places to visit · 3–4 hours total, including the 90-minute drive each way and time at the falls) — The walk from the car to the falls is short and manageable, though the path can be steep near the final descent to the pool. Some climbs are needed, but rest stops are possible. The site itself is less crowded than Abbey Falls.
  • Jathra Waterfalls (Places to visit · 2–3 hours, including drive and walks) — The walk to the waterfalls is downhill on a forest path that can be steep and slippery after rain. Older visitors can manage it slowly, but the return uphill walk is tiring. Consider allowing more time or resting frequently.
  • Nalnad Palace (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours) — The palace has several levels, with narrow stairs and uneven stone floors. The first-floor galleries are manageable, but the upper levels are steep and narrow. A car drops you at the gate, and the main courtyard is level.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Padinalkund Reserve (Places to visit · 3–4 hours including travel and a 1.5–2 hour forest walk) — Forest paths can be slippery and steep in places. Not suitable for those with significant mobility issues or those not comfortable on uneven terrain.
  • Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 4–5 hours including travel and a 2-hour forest walk) — Forest walks are on muddy, slippery trails with roots and rocks. It requires good balance and knee strength. This is not suitable for older travellers without serious hiking experience.
